The word “Geriatrics”

What’s in a name? A lot. It’s all how you look at it or speak it. Of course, we need to look at the Greek language to interpret.  The word, “Geriatrics” comes from the Greek words “geras,”meaning old age. “iatro,” means relating to medical treatment. Geriatrics is the medical specialty that deals with the physiology of aging and with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the aged. It focuses on abnormal conditions and the medical treatment of these conditions.

I really like these alternative words and phrases for our senior citizen population.

  • Golden age
  • Golden years
  • Autumn of life
  • Winter of life
  • Evening of life
  • Second childhood
  • Seniority
